German Baseball: Mainz Athletics Turn Back Regensburg Legionaere

GERMANY – Canadian import Mike Blanke fell one hit shy of a cycle and the Mainz Athletics edged the Regensburg Legionaere 3-2 Friday night to kickoff the 2019 German Baseball-Bundesliga season.

Blanke, who was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 14th Round of the 2010 MLB Draft, clubbed a solo home run in the first to put the A’s on top early. The 30-year-old backstop added a double and a triple to help Mainz open the season on a winning note.

Lennard Stoecklin scattered one unearned run and three hits over seven strong innings but was saddled with a no decision. Reliever Tim Stahlmann (1-0) collected the final six outs to earn the win.

COLOGNE 15, DOHREN 8
On Saturday, the Cologne Cardinals used long balls from Marcel Kujau, Nicolas Eckhardt and Brandt Holland to beat the Dohren Wild Farmers. Niklas Piontek (1-0) overcame five walks over six frames to notch the win.

HAAR 17,10 – SAARLOUIS 1,1
The Disciples picked up a pair of blowout victories against the Hornets. Simon Lechner drove in five runs and both William Thorp and Miguel Pineiro had three hits apiece to help Tomas Ondra (1-0) pickup the win in the first game of a twin bill. American import Louis Cohen (1-0) allowed a run on five hits over five solid innings to help Haar finished off the sweep. Thorp collected another trio of hits while Lucas Steinlein, Christoph Ziegler, and Cedric Bassel all tallied two hits.

MANNHEIM 19,4 – IT sure 1,5
The Tornados and the Falcons split a pair of games. Sascha Lutz went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and Lucas Dickman, Riquerdo Marinez, and David Kandilas each belted a home run in the first game. Gian Rizzo (1-0) fanned nine over six impressive innings to get the win. The Falcons salvaged a split with a narrow win in the second encounter as Luis Santa Cruz went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.

HEIDENHEIM 5, STUTTGART 4
Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez (1-0) pitched eight solid innings to help the Heidekoepfe squeak past the Reds. Shawn Larry went 3-for-4 and Fernando Escarra had two hits for Heidenheim. Xavier Gonzalez Artega went 2-for-3 with a home run for Stuttgart.
