PUERTO RICO – Diamilette Quiles will become the first woman to ever play Double-A baseball in Puerto Rico’s Superior League on Sunday, May 19, when she suits up for the Montaneses de Utuado against the Patrolmen of San Sebastian. The Superior League is the Baseball Federation of Puerto Rico highest level of competition.
“I am very happy, this is one more achievement in my career,” said Quiles. “I am always proud when I get the chance to represent my people in Utuado. Whenever I compete, I always give the best of me.”
The talented ballplayer also added, “I thank the Baseball Federation and the Utuado Highlanders board for the opportunity to be the first woman to play Double-A baseball.”
Quiles, 33, has enjoyed an outstanding 10-year career in Puerto Rico’s Women’s Baseball League. She has earned nine league titles with the Lobas de Arecibo and was the 2018-19 batting champion with a .611 batting average. The corner infielder has represented Puerto Rico in two WBSC Womens Baseball World Cups.
“It’s something never before seen in our Double-A Superior Baseball League,” noted Dr Jose Quiles Rosas, president of the Baseball Federation of Puerto Rico. “We understand it will be another opportunity to expose the talent of women’s baseball and continue to promote inclusion in the sport.”
“I am sure the signature of Diamilette Quiles will open the door for more women to be motivated to play baseball, and other teams of Superior Double-A Baseball emulate Utuado by giving the opportunity to talented players of our female tournament.”
Rafael Juarbe Pagan, the President of the Montaneses de Utuado, believes that Quiles signing is a historic event. “This is not just a symbolic signing, it represents much more. It will contribute to closing the gender-gap and will help demonstrate that in many cases women can compete with men.”
Women’s Baseball is a fast-growing sport and the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and its continental body — Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) — recently announced the launching of a new European Women’s Baseball Championship, that will also serve as a qualifier for the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup.
